A lorry driver fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into a sign instructing drivers to take regular stops, a court has heard.

David Loudon hit a sign saying "Tiredness can kill - take a break" after dropping off behind the wheel in March last year, Dumfries Sheriff Court heard.

Mr Loudon was fined £1,375 and handed nine points on his licence, something which will likely affect his car insurance premiums in the future.

The 34-year-old from Hamilton admitted driving carelessly after nodding off and damaging 70 metres of fencing as well as the sign in the collision on the northbound carriageway of the A74(M) near Johnstonebridge in Dumfries and Galloway.

Mr Loudon also admitted to seven counts of not taking driving breaks, which are a legal requirement.
