Brits underinsured when motoring abroad

Around 7.8 million* motorists cross the channel each year, but they should not assume that they have the same level of insurance cover as when driving in the UK. Churchill car insurance is warning motorists to check their policy to ensure that they don’t end up underinsured and having to pay a bill that’s bigger than the cost of their holiday.

All insurers are required to cover third party cover for travel abroad at no extra cost, but this will not cover any damage or loss to the driver’s own vehicle or possessions. 

Many insurers offer a very limited number of free days of comprehensive cover to drive on the continent or none at all.  Churchill car insurance policyholders do not need to notify their insurer that they are driving in Europe, as they are automatically covered to drive at the same level as in the UK for up to 90 days at a time.

Many other insurers charge for an extension to enable drivers to have the same level of comprehensive cover as when driving in the UK, which can cost up to £30 for a fortnight abroad.

Darren McCauley, Head of Car Insurance at Churchill said: “Motorists should check with their insurer before they travel that they have adequate cover for their needs. Churchill motorists who become involved in an accident abroad can have the peace of mind knowing that their vehicle will be repatriated to the UK for repair. If it’s more convenient for the customer, they can have their car repaired locally.”

The table below shows that average costs of repatriating your car from abroad can cost more than the holiday itself:

• thoroughly plan the route in advance ensuring allowance for rest stops for the driver along the way
• ensure the car is recently serviced, paying particular attention to the oil, water, screenwash etc
• carefully check tyres and  pressures, as incorrect pressure could lead to poor vehicle handling or blowouts and ensure the spare wheel is in a good condition
• ensure you take a spare set of keys (but do not leave them in the car)
• carry spare headlamp bulbs
• don’t forget to adjust the headlights for driving on the right
• in case you do have an accident or break down carry a warning triangle (again this is a legal requirement for most of the continent).
• Make sure that you have comprehensive breakdown assistance to help in the case of an emergency overseas. You will need breakdown cover to help continue your journey without your car or to bring you and your passengers back to the UK
• Brush up on the driving laws of the country you are visiting ahead of your journey
