What is Family Legal Protection?
Family Legal Protection is a legal expenses insurance product providing cover for legal costs up to the value of £50,000 for the following areas:
-
Contractual disputes
A dispute that arises out of an agreement you have for buying or hiring goods or services, selling goods, or buying or selling your home - Employment disputes
A dispute arising out of your employment, which can be heard before an employment tribunal - Tax protection
A full enquiry by HM Revenue and Customs if it resulted from your work as an employee - Property disputes
A dispute that arises out of you owning or living in your main home - Personal injury claims
Death or bodily injury to you - Inheritance disputes
A dispute over something left to you in a will - Legal defence
Your work as an employee, which leads to you being prosecuted in a court of criminal jurisdiction or civil action being taken against you - Motoring prosecution
Your prosecution for an offence connected with using or driving a motor vehicle - Salary while you attend jury service
Your salary or wages for each half or whole day you attend jury service if you cannot claim them back from the court or from your employer
Why do I need it?
Family Legal Protection will pay your legal costs to help you claim compensation for your loss. Most people don't have a personal solicitor to hand or can’t afford their charges. For a small premium, Family Legal Protection will cover your legal costs up to £50,000, win or lose, and is available for all members of your family living with you.
What examples can you give me?
Here are some examples of where Family Legal Protection could come in handy:
- Something you bought is faulty and the seller won't refund or exchange
- You are selling your home and your buyer is not keeping up their end of the agreement
- You fall on the wet floor of a shop and are not able to work through injury
- You are injured at work because health and safety guidelines have not been followed
- You have a car accident, are injured and need treatment
- You have to go to court for a speeding or other driving offence
- You want to contest a family will that you consider unfair
- You have to attend jury service and cannot recover the cost of missing work
Are there are exclusions?
There is a detailed list of terms and conditions in our policy document so make sure you consult this carefully. For example, you are not covered if you don't report an incident within the set time limit of 180 days, and there is no cover for legal costs you have paid or will have to pay before we have agreed to them.
Making a claim
To make a claim, first phone our legal advice helpline on 0845 246 2853. Give us your policy number and we will then send you a claim form to fill in. If we accept your claim, we, or a solicitor we appoint, will try to negotiate a settlement out of court. If your case goes to court, you have the right to choose a solicitor to act for you or we can appoint one for you.
