DriveSure

telematics insurance for 17-25 year-olds

You could save upfront and when
you renew with our DriveSure telematics app

What is DriveSure?

DriveSure is our affordable telematics insurance policy, designed to help young drivers get on the road. It uses GPS technology and records how you drive, so if you drive safely, you could get a reduced premium when you renew.

Why choose DriveSure?

  • Upfront discount in your first year provided you’ve passed your test.

  • Discounts at renewal for good driving scores.

  • No other devices needed, just use your phone.

  • See your scores on the app dashboard.

  • We won’t raise your premium mid-term based on your driving scores.

How does it work?

Buy a DriveSure policy

Get a quote, and if you’re eligible for a DriveSure policy, just add Telematics when prompted.

Download the app

Once you’ve got your welcome email, you can download and register the app.

Record your journeys

The DriveSure app works in the background to record details about your journeys. So, make sure your mobile is with you when you’re driving.

Save at renewal

You may be eligible for a discount at renewal. If you drive safely and get a high score, you'll be rewarded with a discount when you renew your insurance.

What will the app measure?

You can look at your score at any time on the DriveSure app. Your score is determined by environmental and behavioural factors, such as:

Behavioural - how you drive

  • Speed

This measures your speed relative to other road users. In general, if you’re flowing with the traffic and at a similar speed to other road users you’ll get a better score than if you are driving too fast.

  • Smooth driving

This measures how you anticipate traffic flow. Avoiding extreme acceleration and hard braking will lead to smooth driving and a better score.

  • Fatigue

This is a measure of the length of each journey. To avoid driving fatigue it is good practice to take breaks during long journeys to avoid becoming excessively tired.

Environmental - when and where you drive

  • Time of day

This looks at the risks posed by other drivers on the road at the same time. For example, late night journeys are riskier than others.

  • Road risk

This looks at the complexity of the roads you use, based on the amount of junctions, number of lanes, and how many accidents there have been in the past.

Important information

To be eligible for a DriveSure app policy, you must be under 26 years old, with a full UK licence and be the only person on the policy.

  • Downloading and registering the app

The DriveSure app is only compatible with Android or Apple smartphones. You can download and register the app once you‘ve received your welcome email. You’ll need to do this within seven days of your policy start date, otherwise we reserve the right to cancel your policy. This may affect your ability to take out insurance in the future. Please make sure you’re registering with the same personal details that were used to buy your DriveSure policy. The app starts collecting data as soon as you register. If you have any problems please contact us on 0345 878 6375 or email support@churchill.com.

  • Recording your journeys

It’s a requirement of the DriveSure policy that you record all journeys where you’re driving, so they can be scored. This means your phone’s location services must be turned on. If you don’t record a journey for a period of 14 consecutive days and don’t notify us, then we reserve the right to cancel your policy. This may affect your ability to take out insurance in the future. If you know you won’t be driving and recording a journey for a period of time, then you have to let us know beforehand. Call us on 0345 878 6375 or email support@churchill.com.

  • Journeys where you're not the driver

The app will auto tag your journey with a mode of transportation it thinks is most likely. If you were a passenger in a car or using another mode of transporation, you can edit the tag on the journey to reflect this. You have up to 72 hours after a journey to edit the tag. After this, the tag against that journey is submitted and cannot be edited.

Frequently asked questions

  • How do I use the DriveSure app?

The DriveSure app works in the background to capture journey details when you’re in motion, so always ensure your mobile device is with you when you’re on a journey.

  • How much data will the DriveSure app use?

Travelling 1,000 miles at an average speed of 40mph would use roughly 60mb of data per month. To reduce data usage there’s an option to only upload journeys once you’re connected to wifi. A small amount of mobile data will still be used even if the uploads are sent via wifi as the GPS uses data.

  • What happens if I break the speed limit?

We strongly advise all drivers to obey the Highway Code and drive in accordance with the law. However, your score isn’t calculated based on your speed of travel in relation to the speed limit.

  • Will DriveSure affect the cost of my insurance policy at renewal?

Your DriveSure driving score will be considered at renewal and is one of many factors which could increase or decrease the cost of your insurance.

  • What happens if I don’t record a journey?

It’s a requirement of the DriveSure policy that you record all journeys where you’re driving, so they can be scored. If you don’t record a journey for a period of 14 consecutive days and don’t notify us, then we reserve the right to cancel your policy. This may affect your ability to purchase insurance in the future.
